Between 14th and 21st January, 1917, 11th Royal West Surrey (Queens) of 122 Brigade, 41st Division were in the front line at Wytschaete just south of Ypres in Belgium. On the night of 19th-20th January and with an artillery barrage as protection, they raided the enemy trenches opposite them. The Battalion Diary gives no further information about this other than to record that they inflicted casualties on the Germans and took some prisoners. It makes no mention of any casualties suffered by themselves during this raid but it is very likely that Bertie Valentine was killed whilst on this raid.
